This is because Fundraising is a way to create money for a important group, person, or cause.  There are a few reasons people participate in fundraising cuases.  Most people at some time need to raise additional funds that they can not provide themselves.  The main reason that the extra funds are nrequired will vary from one cause to the next.

Possibly the most common group that conduct fundraising activities is charities.  Because these type of groups rely on money that others might donate to their cause.  There are in numerable charities spread all over the world that are constantly working to raise more funds to support their needs.  But without these vital funds most charities would disappear.  There is also a massive range in terms of the size of the charities that are getting around today.  Some of these are very large and very profitable and most of their names are instantly recognisable .  Most of the others are much smaller and have to doubly as hard to raise money.
2. Schools always rely on fundraising activities to gather the money that they might need for a particular project or of late the general running of the school.  Another cause that schools raise for are trips that the students might want to take, because these can cost a huge amount of money.  And if the trip is in the schools , then holding an event to raise money is an excellent way to allow them to still participate in the trip. 
3. Political campaigns often raise considerable funds by fundraising.  Because running a political campaign today involves buying time on television, radio and newspapers as well as travelling all over the place to get the politician message out, not to mention paying staff members which all require significant funding.  Most politicians have to rely on raising funds to stand a chance to win in an election.
4. Churches are also places that need to do fundraising activities.  It doesn't matter if the church needs a new roof or some other type of maintenance in general they rely on the help of others to make it happen.  Even though the church might have its own fundraising objectives laid out over the course of the year in general they always collect money, after all how else can a church survive.
